The 7 Primal Patterns

Writer's picture: Aaron FruitstoneAaron Fruitstone

If you're looking to get the most out of your training, it's important to understand and apply the Primal Patterns into your sessions when you perform your program design!

Believe it or not, we didn't always sit on our asses in a chair for 8-10 hours a day, looking at a computer screen. We needed to walk  and run distances to get water. We needed to hunt for food, which could last for days. We foraged in the wild for plants. We spent a lot of the day in what we'd now consider weird positions. And, it wasn't really that long ago...

If we are seeking optimal physical function and strength throughout a variety of ranges, it's important to include movements that follow the 7 Primal Patterns.

The term Primal Patterns was coined by Paul Chek, one of the most forward thinking minds in the exercise and wellness field.

So, here they are:

-Squat

-Lunge

-Push

-Pull

-Twist

-Bend

-Gait/Combination

You need to thoughtfully include these movements into your training. Since each one of these patterns has huge variety, it's in your best interest to use as many different types of exercises for each pattern as you can! We can't be our optimal ancestral selves if we can't move the way we need to.

Get strong.

-Aaron
