We're going to take a look at reasons 1-4 from last week's blog post about why people don't exercise regularly, see what's really going on, and provide solutions. No longer will you have made up reasons to fail. That means... Success is around the corner!
1. They hate it.
(This really means that what they’ve done in the past has sucked, so exercise sucks).
Any activity that your body is unfamiliar with will be hard at first. Focus on finding an activity that you enjoy. If you hate the water, don’t go swimming! If you don’t like training by yourself, hire a personal fitness coach or take a group class. Get involved in pickup soccer or basketball. If you hate people, build a home gym or get a pair of shoes and go for a run. There’s an activity that’s out there waiting for you.
2. They keep starting a program and quit.
Most Americans are impatient. By not putting in the necessary effort for enough time, you will most assuredly fail. It’s all about finding a program that you like (and will give you the desired result you seek), getting in the workout sessions in a disciplined manner, and following the program for its duration.
Did you do too much too quickly? Did you have a game plan that was designed to personally help you achieve your stated goals? Did the soreness scare you away? Did you choose an activity that you actually hate and force feed yourself fitness?
If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, get it together.
What is the answer to the question, “When do I get to the point where I don’t have to exercise anymore”? The answer is “WHEN YOU DIE”. You are meant to use this body you were given, so get up and get moving.
3. It’s expensive to belong to a gym.
It can be. Or, you can belong to a $10/month crowded meat market. I say to people all the time that if they think the cost of healthy food and fitness is expensive, they should stop doing them. That way, they can perform a cost comparison when their health has failed and they are dependent on medication and medical care.
That being said, you have options. There are expensive, group training facilities that are on the cutting edge of the industry. Or, you can join a regular gym. You can hire a trainer. You can workout at home. Etc…
Again, if a gym isn’t your thing, go on Craigslist and Amazon, and get some basic exercise equipment. A few sets of dumbbells, some kettlebells, and a few different strength exercise bands, along with a pullup/dip bar and a yoga mat is all you need. Or, head to the park. Use the FitTrail, the outdoor exercise equipment, and walk/run the track. Exercise is many things, not a single thing.
I could go on, but I really don’t need to, do I?
4. They don’t see changes in their body.
One of the most frequent excuses, it’s also generally thrown around when either the effort isn’t there to cause change, you haven’t followed your program long enough to see any results, or you live in a fantasy land, where you set goals that are far beyond your capabilities.
Learn to be patient. Regular exercise is a form of discipline. Train your mind and body. Change takes time. Sometimes, it takes a long time.
You didn’t go to bed last night ripped, then wake up this morning overfat. You had to work hard at that. It took time, money, and energy. The same is true in getting leaner and changing your physique.
Changes from exercise not only happen in the mirror, they also happen inside your body. Blood pressure reduction, lower resting heart rate, neurological adaptation, increased capillary and mitochondrial density, increased muscle fiber protein density, and positive changes in hormones are all invisible changes that exercise offers.
Our next post will address items 5-7 from the list. In the meantime, go make it happen!
