So, You Don't Exercise (Part 2)

Writer's picture: Aaron FruitstoneAaron Fruitstone

Here's items 5-7 from last week's list, with strategies to overcome your negative self-talk. That way, all you need is ACTION, and success is yours for the taking!

5. They don’t know what to do.

(This really means that you avoid exercise because you’re not willing to learn how to do it effectively)

In this day and age, there are a number of methods to learn how and what to do. Easiest is to hire a competent personal fitness trainer, either at your gym or who will come to your home. Or, go online and get an online personal fitness coach. Or, head to YouTube and do some research on what works best for you. Use the Nintendo Switch and play fitness games. Put on a pair of shoes and go running. Read a book on exercise that you find intriguing.

Just don’t do NOTHING.

6. They have to take care of the kids.

Some gyms offer child care. If that’s no good for you, then train at home while your kids take naps. Still no good? If they’re old enough, have your kids train with you!

My daughter was basically born on the training mats. She comes outside to my home gym and “plays”. She doesn’t even know she’s working out! She was able to deadlift a 25 pound when she was 40 pounds. I didn’t have to encourage her to do that, and you don’t have to encourage your kids, either! Believe it or not, exercise is play to kids. It should be play for you, too!

7. They can’t stay motivated.

Here’s a crash course in basic psychology. Motivation is always temporary. You really need discipline.

Take a look at your goals. Are they realistic? Did you even set any? If not, there’s no way you will stick to your plan. Be sure to create short, medium, and long term goals, along with specific action plans to achieve them.

Use a system of rewards for hitting goals. If you hit all your workouts for the week, go have a cheat meal. Or get a massage. If you get all your workouts in for the month, get yourself a new pair of training sneakers.

I reward myself by getting a new piece of gear for my home gym. You know, like a new kettlebell, or a medicine ball. Behavior that rewards with more positive behavior.

Remember, exercise should become a habit, not a burden. It’s something that needs to be done because it needs to be done. That’s it. Sometimes, shit just isn’t fun. Some days, you just don’t feel like it.

Do it anyway.

If you have a bad night’s sleep, be aware that you are more vulnerable to impulsive behavior (poor food choices, skipping workouts, etc), and be mindful not to give in to the “lizard brain”. Instead, take a step back and realize that there’s an impact to all things. Everything is a choice, including choosing nothing.

Again, do it anyway.

In our next post, we'll look at the final 3 most common excuses why people don't work out, and will close the door on the negative!
